Advocacy

We advocate for the right of residents to resilient and sustainable place-based local rural livelihoods. These livelihoods include farming, the construction trades, as well as the artisanal and craft trades, and fine arts.

We advocate for the rights of residents to resilient and sustainable place-based local rural livelihoods. These livelihoods include farming, the construction trades, as well as the artisanal and craft trades, and fine arts.

We advocate for increasing, rather than decreasing, the democratization of local governance and decision-making.

-better communication between residents and local government.

-the protection of local livelihoods from the harms of ill-fitting regulation.

-regulations for both environment and people--regulations that address the needs and concerns of local workers--which foster a sustainable and resilient local economy.

I see it as part of advocacy--folks facing challenges with the Trust and CRD often need someone to help them through the process, draft letters and proposals, accompany them to meetings with planners and bylaw officers, review the regulations and challenge staff misinterpretations, meet with various elected officials, do site plans, guide folks through the riparian regulations, etc.

First 30 minute meeting is free, charges after that can be offered at reduced rates for folks facing economic hardship. Subsidizing this consultant service for those struggling can be one of the things we raise money for.

Only a generation ago it was commonplace for people to, upon purchasing rural property, spend a couple of winters in a yurt or temporary cabin (which often later became the chickenhouse!) while building their home. Today, even handcrafted doors and windows are against regulation because they don't meet the industry-backed environmental standards. By offering training in ...
